For all courses – all materials are made electronically available in Microsoft Word format for use/modification. The materials are available in a Google cloud webpage and all participants are provided with the access codes. If you have any problems we are happy to email the documents to you! There is no charge for this.


Course Title: ‘Becoming a Better Performance Management Appraiser’ 

Course Overview:

At a time of scarce resources, schools need to be more effective with the resources that they have. This course will improve the capacity of your senior leadership team to derive better outcomes for learners. This will be achieved by improving teacher performance through the enhanced skills of appraisers, especially in terms of influencing and in school performance management processes.

Target Audience:

Primary Deputy Heads, TLR Holders, SLT Members and future appraisers.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify accurately the specific need of teachers through a detailed analysis of their performance.
  • Identify and use a range of strategies to influence and improve teachers who are performing at different levels.
  • Provide clear and accurate developmental feedback that leads to improved teacher performance.
  • Determine the most effective staff development strategies to improve teaching.
  • Manage conflict successfully.
  • Be able to compile high quality, succinct records of performance and progress.

Course Title‘Improving Teaching for Learning from Good to Excellent’

Course Overview:

The greatest challenge for many schools is to improve the quality of teaching for learning from ‘Good’ to ‘Excellent’. This course sets out to do that by enabling leaders and teachers to uderstand what excellence is and to take the necessary actions to achieve this. A key part of this is the role pupils play in their own learning. ‘Continua for Kids’ will support this journey to independence and excellence. (Available from January 2014) 

Target Audience:

Primary Headteachers, Primary Deputy Heads, TLR Holders, SLT Members with responsibilities for improving teaching and learning.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the key features of excellent practice and what a teacher needs to specifically do to achieve excellence.
  • Work with teachers to assess their own performance and improve it by focussing on four key areas of excellence.
  • Supporting colleagues in their understanding and use of self-assessment resources for pupils to assess their own progress against over twenty indictors – also known as ‘Continua for Kids’.

Course Title‘Ensuring Optimum Effectiveness of LSAs’

Course Overview:

LSAs are a valuable, but expensive resource for schools. The Sutton Trust toolkit indicates that, if LSAs are not developed well, gains are not substantial. This course sets out to ensure leaders, teachers and LSAs have clarity about the roles and responsibilities of LSAs. Toolkits are provided to enable LSAs to become more aware of the specific actions that they need to take if they are to be consistently good or even better…excellent! ‘Continua for LSAs’ will support the process. (Available from January 2014)

Target Audience:

Primary Headteachers, Primary Deputy Heads, TLR Holders, UPS teachers with responsibilities for improving performance of LSAs.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Establishing a value set for LSAs within your school and formalise it into a code of conduct.
  • Improve the performance of LSAs by identifying current levels of performance and focussing on areas for improvement.
  • Use ‘Continua for LSAs’ to support their development.
  • Hold courageous conversations.

Course Title‘Improving Teaching for Learning to Raise Standards: ‘Welcome to Continua!’

Course Overview:

Improving teaching and Learning is the most important issue for schools – teaching after all is the biggest influence on pupils’ learning and standards. This course sets out to support leaders in undertaking the role of improving teaching for learning in a structured and sustained manner. The processes detailed will enable leaders to determine the specific strengths and areas in need of improvement within a teacher’s practice and take the necessary action to raise standards. Participants will leave the course with skills and resources to enable this to happen.

Target Audience:

Primary Headteachers, Primary Deputy Heads, TLR Holders with responsibilities for improving teaching and learning.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Undertake ‘forensic’ lesson observations.
  • Determine and use the ‘key levers’ to ensure improvements in teaching and learning.
  • Use other evidences to triangulate conclusions.
  • Use the ‘Teaching for Learning Continua’ to raise standards.
  • Learn about effective feedback systems.
  • Improve personal influencing skills.

Course Title‘Improving Your School Self Evaluation and Improvement Planning!’

Course Overview:

This course is jointly run with Helen Bowen. Evaluation and improvement are the means by which a school improves. This course blends this overall process in the context of leadership and literacy. Participants will leave with extensive resources to support their school’s improvement journey.

Target Audience:

Primary Headteachers (especially New Headteachers), Primary Deputy Heads and SLT Members keen to improve and enhance their improvement planning skills.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Create a mechanism to align strategic and annual school improvement planning to the issues identified in the school self-evaluation report.
  • Develop a clear layout and use language for school improvement planning that enables the document to drive and respond to the improvement agenda.
  • Be fully aware of the ways in which literacy should be an integral part of the school’s improvement process.
  • Devise structured plans that focus on the key areas of literacy, numeracy, leadership, reducing the impact of poverty on underachievement, well-being and reducing variation in teacher performance.
  • Enhance the role of governors in the process of monitoring and evaluation.

Course Title‘Raising Standards Through Performance Management (Half Day)’

Course Overview:

This course will provide strategies and resources to enable schools to achieve the raising of standards through performance management in an effective and efficient way. The INSET approaches will include presentations, tasks, document scrutiny and discussion.

Target Audience:

New Headteachers or those wanting an update, Primary Deputy Heads, SLT Members who will be involved, or likely to be involved as an acting appraiser.

Course Objectives:

As a result of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Consider the particular skills appraisers will require to work with a range of teachers.
  • Understand the clear process to set, develop and review effective teachers’ objectives.
  • Observe classroom practice effectively and provide developmental feedback.
  • Evaluate and triangulate evidences from a range of sources.
  • Write appraisal statements.
